A single woman was considered of little importance in harsh Victorian society, being thought to be inferior to a man. In addition Victorians held rigid beliefs and opinions on racism and the British Empire. Status in the Victorian culture was very important and the lines between these classes were rarely crossed. Brighouses purpose in writing the play was to highlight gender issues, provide comedy incidents and focus on social problems, for example the Victorians attitude to alcohol. Brighouse created Hobsons character to convey the stereotypical middle class family man, whilst introducing humour to the play. Hobson was a respectable businessman who was proud of his position in society. He was a widower, yet still a responsible father, a churchwarden and a member of the masons; certainly a man who would have been looked up to. However Hobson had many flaws in his character, which would have resulted in a mixed audience reaction. He was stubborn and often undermined and bullied people he believed to be less important than himself. This is displayed in Act 1 where Hobson beats Will Mossop to reinforce his solid Victorian values and emphasise his superior power. In contrast his treatment to Mrs Hepworth, an upper class lady, is most different. He praised her and was polite to her. Good morning, Mrs Hepworth. What a lovely day! (He places a chair for her) He was also obstinate and blinkered, especially where the female point of view was concerned- Im not so partial to women. In addition Hobson suffered from chronic alcoholism, which explained why Hobson often exhibited irrational actions and thoughts. Throughout the play the audience would have reacted in different ways illustrating a variety of social contexts relating to Victorian values. In act 1 the modern audiences reaction would have been anger when Hobson beat Will Mossop. Brighouse inserted this part about one man beating another to highlight the clear divisions in status and how it was perceived to be acceptable to do this in the Victorian times. Theres nobbut one to answer to that kind of talk, my lad (He strikes with belt) and youll get a leathering. Act 1 also portrayed his neglect for his business. Maggie who disapproved of this scolded if you stay more than an hour in the Moon-rakers inn, youll be late for it. The audiences reaction would have been disgust that he would leave his three daughters responsible for the shop, while he went out for a drink. Hobsons attitude changed in Act 3, as did the judgement of the audience. Act 3 portrayed Hobsons insecurity and his humiliation of the marriage settlement, when Maggie tricked him into paying for Vickey and Alice to get married. Ive been diddled. Its a plant. How to Design Effective Advertising For any type of business, advertising is one of the most crucial investments a brand can make. But for small businesses, its an investment that often goes overlooked. Beyond communicating that your business exists, advertising can have a profound effect on how the public views your business. Advertising makes up a large facet of your brands public image, and an effective campaign can help you to grow as a brand by allowing you to have a degree of control over how your audience perceives you.In my freelance and agency experience, Ive worked on advertising for small businesses, large companies and everything in-between. Ive found that there are a few solid guidelines to making effective advertising regardless of the budget or industry. Taking time to make sure your advertising follows these steps will help you to make better ads which communicate a message to your audience in a meaningful, memorable way.Be intentionalAdvertising should be treated like an investment for your business, b ut in order to track your return on that investment, you need to first set measurable goals for what you want your ads to achieve. Goals can as broad or as specific as youd like- for example, maybe you want to increase overall sales by 15% or you want to increase your web traffic to a particular product. Regardless of your goal, having an idea of what exactly it is you want to achieve will help you to make ads that are focused on achieving that goal. The best part about setting goals is youll be able to see how close you came to meeting your goal, and youll know if you need to try a different approach for the next ads you run.Lets say you own a small bike shop, and you want to sell more bikes. In order to do that, youd like to broaden your audience and communicate that you sell all different types of bikes for every type of rider. So, when crafting the message of your ad, youd want to focus on the fact that you sell bikes to suit anyones needs and provide a simple incentive for some one to visit your shop or website. Taking a few extra steps to make sure your ads are truly aimed at achieving your goals will be much more effective in the long run than taking guesses to see what sticks.Keep it simpleA common mistake when it comes to advertising is trying to cram too much information into a single ad. While you may have a lot to say about your brand, consumers are already being inundated by advertising everywhere they look. Whether your ads are in a newspaper, on a billboard, or online, youll likely only have a few seconds to communicate your message to viewers before they move on to the next visual in their environment. So, keeping your message simple and to the point is crucial if you want to make a solid connection with a viewer.This is true for the visuals of your ad, too. While you may be tempted to fill up the ads with as many photos and graphics as you can to take advantage of your ad space, this can create ads that are overwhelming to look at. The environm ent that your viewers will be seeing your ad is probably already crowded with visual information, so a simple ad will stand out better from all the noise. I strongly suggest avoiding most clip art or generic-looking stock photos, as these are overused and probably wont do much to help you to communicate your message. Sites like Noun Project and Pexels are great resources to find free or inexpensive imagery if you dont have any of your own.If youre not sure what you want your ad to look like, dont be afraid to look for inspiration- a quick Google search can be a great place to start. Looking at your competitions advertising can also be useful i n deciding how your business can differentiate itself through its ads. Think about the context your ad will be seen in and how you can make your ad stand out. Keep the layout flexible enough that if the content needs to be reformatted for a different size or medium, itll be easy and quick to do so.Heres a list of content we might gather for our sample bike shop. Notice that the copy is limited to a few lines and gets the point across quickly. The entire ad, from the copy to the imagery, should be focused on the same message.Create hierarchyOne of the simplest things you can do to make your ad effective is to create a clear sense of hierarchy. Not only does this help create a solid focal point, but it will draw the eyes of your viewers through the whole ad and help them to process the presented information faster. Hierarchy is another reason why its important to limit the amount of content you put in an ad- without a clear structure, viewers might have trouble processing what it is y oure trying to say, meaning they probably wont remember the message or take any sort of action.There are many different ways to create structure, but lets use our bike shop ad as an example. Here, the heading and background imagery are the most prominent parts of the ad, as these will grab your viewers attention and direct them to the supporting information below. Well make sure that the heading is significantly larger than the supporting text and that everything feels balanced and easy to read. Putting contact information at the bottom of the ad will help anchor your message so that a viewer can easily take action if they decide theyre interested.A sample ad for our bike shop, with each element sized to create clear hierarchy.Call the viewer to actionCommunicating a message is important, but its hard to tell how effective your message is if a viewer has no way to take the next step and interact with your brand. Beyond just listing contact info, provide a simple, specific action vie wers can take that requires little effort or investment on their part- whether thats visiting a website to learn more, calling for a free quote, or signing up for a mailing list. Providing an incentive for a viewer can also be effective, like offering coupons, free shipping, or a free service for first-time buyers.Its a good idea to keep CTAs (Call To Action) and incentives as simple and easy as possible- the more barriers to interaction users face, the less like it is that theyll participate. For digital ads, a simple click to a landing page is the easiest way to engage a user. Emphasize that the user can click by placing the CTA in a button or using an arrow. For print ads, coupons can work in the same way to draw viewers to the ad.Be consistentThe number one mistake I see with small business advertising is a lack of consistency across advertising. Ive worked with business owners who will show me their recent advertising, and the style and tone of each ad make it look like it belo ngs to a different company. This can create a disjointed view of your business as a whole and makes for a lack of visibility with your audience. Keeping your fonts, colors, imagery, and tone of voice as consistent as possible will help you to develop a stronger visual brand that your audience will begin to recognize and become familiar with. Not to mention, itll also make your life easier because you wont have to start from scratch every time you need to create a new ad.If youre running several ads across medium at the same time, taking a campaign approach can help you to reinforce your image to the public even more. Once you have a message and a design developed, use those same elements across all your concurrent ads, regardless of if theyre print, digital, or out-of-home. This approach has elicited the same response from a lot of the businesses I work with- But wont a viewer get bored of seeing the same ads? While thats a valid concern, consistent messaging and visuals help viewer s to form a stronger impression of your brand each time they see the advertising, especially across different mediums. Your business and message will become more memorable to viewers, making them more likely to interact with your brand over time.Think about the most memorable ad campaigns youve seen over the yearsââ¬âgiant companies like Geico, Coca-Cola, and McDonalds create consistent, effective campaigns by taking the same content and showing it across TV spots, billboards, direct mail, and more. The same can be done on a smaller, more local scale for a small business. In the case of our bike shop- as a small business owner, you may not have the budget to run an extensive campaign, but even being consistent across a few ads will help to reinforce your message.Be accurateThis last point is a bit obvious, but its an easy one to forget- make sure your advertising is free of errors and typos before sending it off into the world. Any accidental misinformation or confusing statemen ts you present to a viewer can quickly undermine your credibility and quality. Triple check everything, from the copy to the contact info, making sure it is clearly worded and spelled correctly. Have multiple people check over the ad as well- fresh eyes may spot something you missed. Make sure you have the correct ad specifications as well, so that your ad is sized correctly, contains the correct bleed, and is submitted in the correct file format and resolution. Doing this will ensure that your ad runs on time and looks the way you intended it to.While advertising can seem daunting, keeping these basic principles in mind can make it a little easier for you to create effective ads and take advantage of the ad space you spend money on. Advertising is a valuable opportunity for you to make an impression on potential customers and communicate why you deserve their attention. Self Appraisal for Initial Personal and Professional Practice - Assignment Example This study is an analysis of self appraisal of my initial personal and professional practice based on SWOT analysis and two metric tests; the MBTI typological test and a career test. The self assessment metric tests are first discussed informing the SWOT analysis. A conclusion is then arrived at about my initial personal and professional practice disposition after the self evaluation. MBIT Typological Test According to Vos, Clipeleer and Dewilde (2009, p. 761), there is a strong relationship between personality and career progress as indicated by structural equation modelling testing of career plan theory. Personality heavily influences an individualââ¬â¢s professional practice and ultimate career success. This is because personality not only determines an individualââ¬â¢s career planning but also their behaviour when in the professional field. As a result, a number of personality type tests and aptitude metrics have been generated to help individuals to determine their persona lity and their preferential professions and employers determine whether the candidate employees have the right personalities needed for the jobs. The MBIT is a typological metric test for personality; the test has been proven to discern an individualââ¬â¢s personality, thus, informing its choice for my personality testing. After taking the MBIT test at Human Metrics (2011), the results indicated that I am of the ENFJ personality type explained by the following scores; 56% extraverted, 75% intuitive, 38% feeling and 45% judging. The description of the EFNJ personality type indicated that such individuals are highly expressive and good communicators, enthusiastic and passionate about their roles, close connection with those around, imaginative, idealistic and intuitive. The results also suggested a range of areas that may suit my career aspirations basing on my personality; these were management, counselling, psychology and education. Career Planning Test According to Abele and Wie se (2008, p. 735), the contemporary world, more than ever, needs individuals to plan and self-manage themselves in order to develop their professional lives. Changes in the socio-economic structures of the modern world and the dynamics of the labour market translate to a situation where it is necessary to plan career development. One of the ways through which career planning can be initiated involves taking a career test which details an individualââ¬â¢s likely career path based on their interests and personality. Career planning tests entail not only the skills and qualifications that a person has but also their interests and the styles they employ to execute tasks. Thus, taking a career test was selected as an approach to self-appraisal as it is effective in establishing the initial considerations for personal and professional practice. The test I selected in this case was the Career Planning Test by Career Path (2012), where 24 statement pairs are used to discern the individua lââ¬â¢s career preferences, interests and styles of performing tasks. A painting is the most effective exhibition of oneââ¬â¢sà idea about a particular concept or material. A great painting enriches our experience of life, just as a great poem does, since great painters make us see and think a great deal more than the objects before us, they teach us to look at a scene through their eyes, their imagination. Ità can explain a story which will take several pages if it is explained inà words. Today Iââ¬â¢d like to draw your attention to portrait painting.At first, Iââ¬â¢m to present the definition of this genre of painting, than Iââ¬â¢m to speak on three artists William Hogarth, Mary Cassat and Valentin Serov as the representatives of three different movements in portrait painting. As Britannica says Portrait paintingà is aà genreà ofà painting, where the intent is to depict the visual appearance o f the subject. Beside human beings, animals, pets and even inanimate objects can be chosen as the subject for a portrait. Portraitists create their work by commission, or are inspired by admiration or affection for the subject.Historically, portrait paintings have primarily memorialized the rich and powerful. Today, the portrait painting is still commissioned by governments, corporations, groups, clubs, and individuals. As you can know there are a lot of movements in painting in general and in portrait painting in particular. They range from realism to pop-art, but Iââ¬â¢m to single out realism, impressionism and modernism. The movement of realism is based on the exact reflection of human face and body. Clear and exact lines, realistic colours are typical of it. The representative of this movement is William Hogarth.He is considered even one of the founders of realistic movement in Britain. Hogarth emerged as an importantà portraitist, producing several impressive small-scale i nformal group portraits of members of a family or friends and a number of sensitive portraits of individual sitters. The example of realistic style is expressed in the painting The Shrimp Girl. It was painted around 1740ââ¬â45. The painting, a relatively late work by Hogarth, is one of several in which he experimented with a loose, almostà impressionistic style, nevertheless even in this portrait the painter tried to find the beauty in real life and its reflection.The painting depicts a woman selling shellfish on the streets of London, typically a job for the wives and daughters of fishmongers. One of the brightest movements of portrait painting is impressionism, characterized by loose and broad strokes, diffused lines and even the distortion of human body. The wonderful representative is Mary Cassatt. She was a wonderful American painter and her place in the history of American art is unique, because she responded in a very distinctive way to the mandate to portray modern lif e.Cassatt created a personal language out of the grammar of Impressionism. Most often, she portrayed women like herself, e. g. Miss Mary Ellison is the second of two portraits of Mary Ellison, which was created in 1880. Cassatt there concentrates on Miss Ellison's contemplative mood. In this painting, Cassattââ¬â¢s brushwork is open and sketchy, colours are soft and even merge. The mirror behind Ellison is a device the artist used often; its presence allows the expansion of the composition's implied space to include areas that the viewer could not otherwise see.The last movement Iââ¬â¢d like to mention is modernism. It appeared on the basis of impressionism, and even if strokes are broad and strong, lines are clear and human face and body are reflected almost exactly. In general, modernists embellish () the image. Valentin Serov is a famous representative if the movement. In fact, in his style of painting there was his classical technique when one precise stroke of brush was a pplied without further reworking. Serov is seen as the first Russian modernist, and his composition Girl with Peaches(1887) initiated the style of Russia.In the painting Serov pieces together fragments of the interior scene and still-life. The light pours in through the window and dissolves the contours of the objects. Serov uses warm tones for the girl which in some way contrasts with the colder tones of the space. The girl is painted almost exactly in clear lines and good proportions. Their style always reflects their epoch and predominant movements in other spheres. But paintings in any genre excite and impress.
